We’ve heard one too many stories about how people dread root canal treatments, let alone the dentist itself. Pain is almost always associated with the idea of a dentist, and that’s what pulls patients away from having their teeth treated. However, this should not be the case, as your dentist and that root canal procedure may be your ticket to maintaining that Hollywood smile.
Save a Tooth, Save Your Smile
Would you rather have a toothless graduation photo or would it please you to know that that’s a denture saying “hello” on your social media photo? Certainly not the picture you’d want to be in. In case you need to have a tooth treated, your dentist can always give you the opposite of what you know about it. Pain, soreness, and anxious appointments – those are just fragments of your imagination and it’s not as if that’s what your dentist intends to do. The purpose is to save the tooth – not send you into a panic attack.
You know there would be drillings and ear screeching sounds at the dental operatory, and that’s one thing you don’t want. However, that’s part of the play and you’d have to be in character. Be the cooperative patient and your dentist will give you the treatment on a silver platter. Of course, anesthesia comes first to eliminate pain and the imaginary pictures that come with it. The drilling won’t start unless the tooth and the surrounding area are not totally anesthetized. The minute you feel any intolerable pain, inform your dentist to augment the anesthesia.
The procedure is usually done in multiple appointments to reduce the stresses upon the jaw or temporomandibular joint with prolonged opening of the mouth. After each session and as the anesthesia wears off, you may start on your pain reliever. Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed by your dentist, most especially if there was some serious infection present.
Home post-operative care can be done by icing the area or putting warm compress. Icing helps relieve the sensation, while the warm compress allows for proper blood circulation within the area. You should also adhere to a soft diet and avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent subjecting the affected tooth from undue masticatory stresses.
If it still pains you to undergo a root canal treatment, it could be more painful if you’ll just leave it to decay and eventually go away. A toothless smile is not one for the books, so conquer that fear, as it will only take you a step further from regaining that once perfect killer smile.
