All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems. The primary health issues of Jack Russell Terriers are a big concern for most owners.
If you are one of the pet parents of a Jack Russell Terrier and you find something wrong with your fur baby, be on the safe side and consult your vet. The following are some of the most common health problems which can affect your Jack Russell Terriers, their symptoms, and what you can do about them.
This is a hereditary disease in which one or both of the lenses of the eye become partially or completely dislocated from their normal location behind the cornea. When plagued with lens luxation, the dog may not be able to open its eye. There may be fluid discharge, reddening of the eye, and noticeable pain. Surgery may be the answer to this problem, so talk to a qualified vet.
Heart disease is a common Jack Russell Terrier health problem. To reduce the risk of heart disease in your Jack Russell, exercise and healthy diet is highly recommended. Vitamin E can help older dogs with heart disease. When your dog is suffering from heart disease, you may notice symptoms, such as losing weight, a change in his appetite, lethargy, difficulty in breathing, coughing and wheezing.
You know that your dog has kidney problems when there is an increase in urination, loss of appetite, excessive drinking, weakness and lethargy, shivering, weight loss, mouth smells and ulcers. If your dog has a problem with his kidneys, he must be fed with low protein diet and plenty of water. You may want to check in with your vet and get him to prescribe a diet for your dog.
This is a bacterial infection which is spread through infected urine. It can infect your dog through the urine of other dogs or through contact with rats or mice. Some of the symptoms include obvious pain, high fever, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and rapid weight loss. Your dog should have been vaccinated against leptospirosis when he was a puppy, and should have an annual booster shot. Even vaccinated dogs can still carry the disease, so if you suspect that your dog is infected with leptospirosis, take him to the vet immediately. If diagnosed with leptospirosis, your dog is given antibiotics to fight the infection.
Some of the other common health problems of Jack Russell Terriers which may also be common to other dog breeds are listed as cataracts, diarrhea, constipation, liver disease, ear infections, kennel cough, external parasites like fleas, ticks, and lice.
It is best to remember that when it comes to your fur babies, always consult your vet when in doubt to prevent the symptoms from getting worse.
