This year, two big Marvel movies will be hitting cinemas, namely Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. What’s extremely curious about the latter is that, according to Kevin Feige, this movie will serve as the doorway to several stories and characters throughout the Marvel universe. It’s not going to be strange to see Cumberbatch pop in other established Marvel movies if that is the case.
Another exciting thing about the film is the possible appearance of an Infinity Stone to further connect it with other Marvel universes. So far, we have only been introduced with four, one of which is on Vision’s forehead during Avengers: Age of Ultron. In fact, a relic to be featured in the Doctor Strange, the Eye of Agamotto, is being speculated to be one of the Infinity Stones.
Doctor Strange will star Sherlock’s very own Benedict Cumberbatch later this year and revolves around the origin story of Doctor Strange where he attempts to heal himself after suffering injuries that render him unable to perform surgery. Out of desperation, he turns to the mystical arts which then paves the way to make him ‘Sorcerer Supreme’ of the planet. It is the first film for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe lined up by the studio. Judging from that small backgrounder, it is quite reasonable that we will be seeing the sixth Stone in the film since dark magic will be involved.
Together with Cumberbatch is Rachel McAdams who will most likely play his love interest, while Tilda Swinton will play the Ancient One who not only is a powerful sorcerer but Dr. Stranger’s mentor. Other cast members of the film are Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Michael Stuhlbarg as Dr. Nicodemus West, The Martian’s Benedict Wong as Wong, and Hannibal’s own Mads Mikkelsen who will be playing the film’s main antagonist.
