“Farewell Season” not “Final Season.” This was what American Idol panelists were told to say. But what does this actually mean?
Judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick, Jr. all feel sad about this “farewell season.” However, ruling out the idea of the show’s return someday is not within their thoughts. Host Ryan Seacrest even joked about crying himself to sleep each night just because American Idol may have just come to an end after all this time.
Sources have asked Fox on their stance regarding this matter and firmly said: “This is the farewell season of Idol… on Fox.” Since Fremantlemedia owns the show, they will be free to shop American Idol to other networks if Fox does not allow its renewal. If this becomes a possibility, Jennifer Lopez says it is something she’d always consider.
This season will bring back nostalgic memories by giving former Idol winners an active role as contestants’ singing coach. Scotty McCreery, Nick Fradiani, David Cook, and Ruben Studdard, just to name a few, will take part in the competition once again. Executive producer Trish Kinane even says that Kelly Clarkson, despite being pregnant, will become a guest-judge to the season’s first live show.
What about the three original judges?
Ryan Seacrest says, “I’ve spoken to all of them [original trio Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson] and we as a team have talked to them about coming back to do something for the final season. They are going to do it, it’s just a matter of figuring what to do with them.” Kinane, on the other hand, says Cowell will probably appear only on the finale.
Americal Idol has changed a few rules this season though. Instead of the audience voting for contestant eliminations starting Top 24, the judges still have the power. When contestants are cut down to Top 10, only by then do the audience have their full power of deciding who goes and who stays. Whether this is a good or a bad move from Idol is a question that remains. Either way, let’s stay updated until the American Idol Farewell Season winner is crowned.
