It is the ultimate dream and desire of everyone to have that fancy Hollywood smile. Flashing a set of pearly white teeth at your friends and family, raveling in the joy and pride of having a full row of healthy enamels – yes! That is certainly the crème de la crème of the Hollywood ‘It’ crowd. But do you know that you can also display that startling Hollywood smile yourself?
‘Intense Light’ Whitening
A dentist will usually slather a strong bleaching gel on each tooth and then expose the enamels to intense light. The colored molecules lingering on the surface of your teeth are then reduced substantially to lesser pigmented molecules, thus resulting in whitened teeth by six to ten shades brighter than its original color. This method is pricey, but the whitening procedure results in a change that can last well over two years.
DIY Bleaching Kits
This technique utilizes dilute bleaching gel that is applied to a set of discolored teeth an hour per day for easily a fortnight. Although less effective than intense light whitening due to its lower hydrogen peroxide content, DIY bleaching kits present a cheaper alternative for those running on a tight budget.
A mould of your mouth is usually taken by the dentist and a bespoke mouth guard is created. A bleaching gel is then applied every night for seven days to oxidize and lighten the molecules clustered on the dentine under the enamel. This method is highly effective, but also comes at a high cost. It is not recommended for those with ‘synthetic’ teeth however.
Whitening toothpastes allegedly contain chemicals or enzymes that rid stubborn tooth stains or create a protective enzymatic layer over teeth against harmful bacteria that cause mottling. However, it has been noted that this method isn’t actually affective and needs to be utilized regularly to keep tougher stains at bay.
Veneers is the most advanced and effective treatment in treating discoloration problems. A small amount of the tooth’s enamel is slowly sloughed off and a customized porcelain layer is overlapped over the front of each tooth. This can also correct any dental irregularities such as gaps between the teeth. The only drawback is the incredibly high cost charged per tooth.
Scaling and Polishing
Scaling and polishing requires the removal of hardened plaque or surface stains that will ultimately make the teeth look cleaner and brighter, but this will not whiten your teeth. The effect lasts half a year, depending on your eating habits and the plaque buildup rate.
Teeth-Whitening Chewing Gum
This method is the least effective. Superficial stains might be reduced and the cost is the cheapest.
Sonic Wave Toothbrushes
Ultrasonic waves will reduce plaque buildup and stains, but it will not improve the complexion or natural shade of your teeth. The costs vary according to the model of toothbrush in question.
